The five stages in short

Studying in Austria is a fairly long process, but a clear one. Here are the stages in order; we go through each below:

  1. Choose your programme: the university, the field and the right semester.
  2. Get your certificate accepted: recognition of your baccalauréat, and possibly a preparatory course.
  3. Apply to the university: within your own deadline (usually earlier).
  4. Residence permit: applied for at the embassy before you travel.
  5. Arrive and enrol: address, insurance and final enrolment.

Is your certificate accepted?

You need a secondary school certificate that is essentially equivalent to the Austrian Reifeprüfung, or a diploma of at least three years from a recognised post-secondary institution. The decision lies with the university's rectorate (Rektorat), based on agreements or a case-by-case review, and it may set conditions such as additional exams.

This means that acceptance of the Algerian baccalauréat is not one rule for every field: check with the university itself before anything else.

Language: the certificate you need follows the language of your programme: English-taught means an English certificate, German-taught means a German one. Entry to the university's supplementary course requires at least A2. We recommend learning German before you travel even if you study in English: it makes daily life easier and improves your chances of finding work.

The preparatory course (Vorstudienlehrgang)

Many holders of non-EU certificates go through it: German courses on five levels, plus supplementary exams in the subjects your field requires. Each course takes one semester, so if you do not speak German, plan for two to three semesters (about one to one and a half years) before the bachelor's begins. You cannot enrol as a regular student before passing the exams.

The preparatory year is not offered in every city, only in a limited number (Vienna, Graz, Innsbruck and Linz are among the main ones). Check with the university which cities are available this year.

Preparing and legalising your documents

Before applying, you need your academic documents legalised the right way. Austria objected to Algeria's accession to the Apostille Convention (objection dated 20 April 2026, according to the Hague Conference status table), so an apostille stamp is not enough between the two countries and the traditional chain still applies:

  1. Certification by the issuing body: the baccalauréat from the Ministry of National Education, and the licence (bachelor's) from the Ministry of Higher Education through your university.
  2. The Algerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs: legalises the document.
  3. Translation: preferably into the language of the programme you will study (English or German).
  4. The Austrian embassy: all documents are handed in for final legalisation.
Practical details from the embassy: the Austrian embassy receives Algerians on Thursdays from 10:00 to 12:00 without an appointment, and legalising one document costs about €80, paid in dinars at the bank rate. This comes from students who have been through the process; days and fees can change, so call the embassy or check its website before you go.

Official source for the objection: the status table of the Apostille Convention at the Hague Conference on Private International Law. The Convention entered into force for Algeria on 9 July 2026, but Austria's objection means it does not apply between the two countries.

Deadlines you cannot miss

Application dates differ a lot between universities and universities of applied sciences (FH), so do not rely on a general date. Austrian universities set an application deadline for non-EU applicants, Algerians included, that is much earlier than the well-known general dates (5 September and 5 February). Example: University of Vienna for 2026/27 (bachelor's and master's without a special admission procedure):

Note: programmes with an admission procedure or aptitude test have an earlier window (for bachelor's programmes at the University of Vienna: 2 March – 4 May 2026). Places are limited, and you can retry without limit.

What does it really cost?

What you pay each semester is about €750. The amount you must prove you have is different and depends on your age; it is lower for those under 24.

The residence permit, step by step

  1. Get your admission letter from the university (or proof of enrolment in the preparatory course).
  2. Apply at the Austrian embassy or consulate responsible for where you live in Algeria, at least three months before you travel. Six months is better.
  3. The authority decides within 90 days at most (extended by 90 days if documents are missing). In practice, students report that processing usually takes one to two months depending on the city and the officer in charge.
  4. After approval you have 3 months to apply for the D visa, and 6 months in total to collect the permit inside Austria.

Documents required

  • Valid passport (the original is shown)
  • Colour photo 3.5×4.5 cm, no older than 6 months
  • Criminal record certificate, no older than 3 months, legalised and translated (first application)
  • Proof of accommodation in Austria for at least three months
  • Travel insurance for entry, then comprehensive health insurance after arrival
  • Proof of funds for 12 months in advance
  • Admission letter from the university (or proof of enrolment in the preparatory course)

Checklist for a first application. The authority may ask for additional documents.

Proof of funds: it depends on your age

Your ageMonthlyTotal for 12 months
Under 24€722.58€8,670.96
24 and over€1,308.39€15,700.68

The money must be in a bank account or savings book in your name, accessible from Austria. If the money comes from your father, uncle or another family member, transfer it to your own account and prepare proof of where it came from.

If your accommodation costs more than €386.43 a month, you must also prove the difference.

Health insurance

  • For entry: travel insurance valid in Austria with cover of at least €30,000 including rescue and repatriation costs. It is only a temporary solution.
  • When you collect the permit: comprehensive insurance, either student self-insurance with ÖGK (€78.84 a month in 2026) or comprehensive private insurance with no waiting periods and no cap on costs, with written confirmation from the company.

Proof of accommodation

You need proof of accommodation in Austria for at least three months, such as a rental contract or an agreement for a place in student housing (Studentenheim). If your admission is still conditional, it is enough at first to make your funds and accommodation "credible" (glaubhaft). The permit is usually granted for 12 months.

The financial sponsor and the bank account

These are among the most important points of the application, and mistakes here lead to refusals:

  • The financial sponsor: no law requires a sponsor to be close family, but it is better if they are (father, mother or uncle). They can be in Algeria.
  • If the sponsor is outside the family (a friend of your father, for example), attach a declaration explaining your relationship.
  • Source of funds: prepare proof of it, such as a sale contract for gold, a car or farmland; the authority may ask about it.
  • The bank account: it must be in your own name, not your father's or your sponsor's. This is a common mistake that causes refusal.
A separate legal point: there is also the formal "declaration of liability" (Haftungserklärung): an allowed option, not a requirement, for a student permit. It is issued by a person living in the EU, notarised by an Austrian notary or court, and valid for at least five years. This is a different format from the family sponsorship from Algeria described above.

Note: the points on the sponsor and the account are based on the experience of students who have been through the process and on official sources. Check your embassy's requirements before applying.

Choosing housing

We recommend university housing (Studentenheim) because it makes the procedures easier, but independent private housing is also accepted and perfectly normal.

Work

To work legally you need two things: your residence card, and registering your address with the municipality within 3 working days of arriving. Your employer requests a permit from the AMS before you start, and a permit can be granted for up to 20 hours a week. Student jobs such as delivery are available. Stay well away from illegal work.

Practical tip: student wages are enough for basic expenses, but it is best to save the costs of your first 4 months from your own money until you settle in and find work, so you are not under pressure and can stay focused on your studies.

Renewing your permit every year

  • Pass courses equal to at least 16 ECTS credits during the academic year.
  • A bank statement showing your financial means for the new year.
  • Apply for the extension no earlier than three months before the permit expires.
  • The procedure is faster than the first application, and students report approval usually takes a week to ten days.

Frequently asked questions

Can I apply in September?

Most likely not. The University of Vienna, for example, sets a deadline for non-EU applicants, Algerians included, that ends on 3 August for the winter semester. Check your university's deadline early.

How much time do I need before I start studying?

If you need a preparatory course and do not speak German, plan for one to one and a half years before the bachelor's, on top of the permit processing time.

Is studying at public universities free?

No. You pay about €750 per semester (€726.72 tuition and €26.20 ÖH student union fee) at public universities.

Can my father or uncle be my sponsor?

Yes, in practice: the sponsor can be in Algeria, and it is better if they are close family. If they are outside the family, attach a declaration explaining the relationship. Most important: the bank account must be in your own name, and you must be able to show where the money came from.

Can I work while studying?

Yes, with a work permit requested by your employer, up to 20 hours a week without a prior labour market test.
